Old Strip Light Housing on Flat Surface

Hello,

I have an old fluorescent tube strip light that I want to fit to a wooden beam on the ceiling. However, annoyingly, the metal housing is not flat, there are a couple of raised bumbs. There is already a similar light fitting in one of our outbuildings and this is very loose and wobbly, presumably because of these same bumps. I assume these bumps are there for a good reason? What's the best way to attach this? I could use some bits of plywood between the bumps, or I could use some sort of foam along the whole length that would have some give. I really don't want to chisel a recess in the beam, although I may need to do that for where the cable comes through.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Phil
