What Varnish is Hard Enough to Reduce Cat Scratching Damage?

I am in the process of removing wallpaper from our upstairs hall, high-ceiling stairs, dining room, and front door area (all open plan) due to our 4 year old cat shredding the walls. This is in preparation for skimming, which I'm told should deter her.
She has also been dragging her claws down the door surrounds. I was thinking to coat these with an extra tough varnish. Can anyone recommend a varnish for this purpose? Would it be an idea to use a yacht varnish, or maybe a floor varnish? I don't really care if it's overkill, just as long as it stops her from destroying them!
Thanks in advance, from one frazzled cat owner.
