Removing Wallpaper and Painting Over Lining Paper

We've recently started decorating our new house and in one room, there are three walls that have been lining papered. I understand its best to just leave this in place, but is there a good way to cover any gaps we may come across? (can we use multi purpose polyfilla?).
And one of the walls was also wallpapered over the lining paper. We have taken this off but it has left a small amount of adhesive in some places. What's the best way to get this off withoit ruining the underlying lining paper? I'm thinking soaking is not the best idea :/
