Sealing Around Existing Wooden Windows

Hi and thanks for looking.
I have some timber windows set into brick and stone surrounds. I need to renew the sealing around the windows but unsure what was used before or what a modern alternative might be.
My next door neighbour used an orange/red coloured sandy putty like stuff. Not sure of the name of it but he trowelled a large bead all round the edge in a wedge and this looks good and has lasted.
So my question is what is this substance called and where can I buy it or is there a better modern alternative?
Thanks,
Alex.
