What to do about flaking paint before repainting

Hi all,

New to this forum and looking forward to being part of it. Sorry in advance if the answer to this has been posted elsewhere - I couldn't see it. My partner and I just bought our first flat and we're delighted but also inexperienced in the ways of decoration, so I hope you'll forgive the basic nature of this question.
We want to re-paint the walls but have found some examples of flaking paint (see pictures below) revealing layers of paint below. What would people advise we do about this (i.e before re-painting)?

Thanks in advance!

Hi john_o_diy
You will have to scrap off all loose paint, fill the edges left and then sand down until you get a stable keyed surface. You can then paint with the appropriate paint starting with a primer if needed.
