How many shades of white are there?

Hi,
more of a trivia question this but I am becoming extremely frustrated with a friend who insists that there is only one shade of white in the paint world. "white is white" is all he can say! I'm pretty sure I am correct in saying there are actually thousands of shades of white. Does anyone know exactly how many there are so that I can put him in his place?
