Textured paint?

Hi
I have a room to decorate that in some places has quite bumpy walls, on another wall there is still the remains (painted over) of some textured wallpaper. Somebody has suggested that i use textured masonary paint to cover all the lumps and bumps. Will masonry paint look ok on an inside wall? I have seen other textured paint but it only seems to be available in white. I know you can get some stuff from polycell to smooth over but when i've looked this up it doesn't get very good reviews and seems to be quite hard to use so i basically want to get a better finish just from painting but not sure what paint to buy.
All advice welcome.
