Hi all,

I am a first-time DIY-er and in the process of redecorating my bathroom.

I'm trying to strip the walls of paint to enable a suitable tiling surface. Currently stuck at the last layer, which seems to be oil-based paint from decades ago. I've been working with chemical strippers (Bartoline and Paintpanther), followed by a wipe down with white spirit and sanded, but just can't seem to shift it.

1. Is there a more effective way to remove this last layer?
2. Or can I just leave it as is and continue the prep anyway?

Also, I'm working with a previously tiled splashback, which has made the wall uneven (see photos below). I was going to repair this area only, but wondered if the rest of the area to be tiled will need plastering too?

Any advice given will be much appreciated. The more detailed the better. Thanks!

Hi renovationrenagade,
Repair the damaged areas, cross score the painted areas, then tile as required.
