Preparing Interior Doors For Painting

I want to paint over the interior doors in my house, as I cant afford to replace them and they are hideous!!
They are original doors put in the house which was built early 70's and are cheap hollow dark brown mdf doors with a bit of a shine so i presume some sort of varnish. A lot of them are also covered in sticky marks from stickers and hooks that the previous owner and her children had stuck to the doors, and loads of scratches etc.

I was going to sand them lightly with a medium sandpaper, then paint them with a multi purpose primer before using satin wood on them - does this sound about right or do i need to prepare them more?

Thank you!

simple tip for getting rid of the old stickers and glue- lighter petrol, wiped on and left for a minute or so, then you can clean off the glue (cheap too) A light sanding will "key" the surface so you can prime and paint.
