Am thinking about lowering my kitchen ceiling by approx. 6in to cover an old pipe box on two sides of the walls. Never tackled this before so not sure of the steps involved. Would also like to turn existing lighting supply into spotlights. Can anyone give advice??

This requires a frame to be constructed to fix the new ceiling to. This frame can consist of timbers fixed at the required height around the perimeter of the walls with timbers fixed in between them as will be the case with the existing ceiling joists, or you can simply fix timbers to the timbers in the existing ceiling to build a frame to fix a plasterboard ceiling to. In this situation, and given your lack of experience it might pay you to remove the plasterboard from the existing ceiling so you can see how the joists are spaced and fixed. This will give you a much clearer idea of what you need to achieve to get a new frame in place for the lowere ceiling. It will also be much easier to arrange the circuit for your new lights. The lights question should be a case of swapping the existing conections over to spotlights but see what you have got first then come back with the details and someone will help you with the lighting question.
