Smell under floor

by skillyb » Sun Jul 22, 2007 12:25 am

Our road was recently flooded due to flash flooding of the main soil drain. Water in road got to avbout 8". The water did not reach the house or get into the air bricks and we have had no water in the house. However now 24 hours later- there is a foul smell coming from all built in cupboards downstairs -eg under stairs.

We have checked the drain cover at the side of the house and drain doesn't seem to be blocked. Our bathroom is on the ground floor and in the past in exceptionally heavy rain we have found snails (and once a frog!) in the loo. Could it be back up of waste? Am desparate as have just laid new laminate flooring at back of house.

This could just be the smell of damp as water would have probably getting under the house through the ground, other problems could be collapsed drains etc. Unlikely if the smell has only appeared since the floods.

is downstairs wood or concrete floors ?

Can you not lift the floorboards and check for leaks or water ? under the stairs where it will not affect your decor.
