Leaky shut off valve from removing heated towel rail?

I've just removed an old heated towel rail from the bathroom and discovered that one of the shut off valves is leaking. It seems to be leaking past the shut off point (if that makes sense) and NOT through the joint. At the moment I've got a washing up bowl underneath it and will probably turn off the stop cock tonight. I have ordered some new valves but is there a way to 'cap. this valve until they arrive and I can get a plumber to fit my new towel rail?
Hope that made sense! Cheers.
