I had a new bathroom suite fitted last year, but the toilet seat, appears to me anyway, has never fitted, and has constantly been up (fine if it's an all male household)
However, on the right hand side, there is a screw not attached to anything, and I'm not really sure about the left hand side, but it is loosely attached. I've heard rumours that I might need a new toilet, please help x

Its about a million-to-one that you need a new toilet Shona but probably a new seat is required. Look under the back of the pan where the old seat should be secured by either wing nuts or plastic nuts, unscrew them and lift of the old seat. Most new seats come with fitting instructions so you should not have a problem fitting your chosen seat.

Replacing whole toilet is the only solution as we had a customer on Monday almost having the same kind of problem, replacing whole toilet seat so just order good quality seat with same fixings..... good back up though..
