Magnetic Plate on Bath Panel Help Needed

Hi there,
Have had issues with a V&B bath panel sliding down - it's essentially two heavy for the originally included magnets. Plumber was in contact with V&B who sent out a kit with stronger magnets and larger, thicker metal plates which he installed on the bath panel. While the strength of the magnet now seems plentiful we have a new issue whereby the metal plates are coming loose from the bath panel (one is off completely). I figured that rather than drag the plumber back out I should just be able to use a stronger adhesive however before I can do that I need to have clean plates.
I guess my question is two fold:
-What is the best method for removing the previous adhesive given that I don't really know what it is (tile adhesive? See attached)?
-What should be used instead to reattach them to the panel? I notice that the plumber didn't key the inside of the panel so perhaps it was doomed from the start?
Many thanks for your time!
Scott
