Replace Electric Shower That's Burnt out

Hi all,
My electrical shower stopped working. It was installed years ago by someone else.
I've opened the shower cover just to have a look. Looks like the connection between the mains cable the shower has burned out/melted.
The shower is 7.8 - 8.5kW. I've attached images of the shower.
Is damage to the connection because the voltage travelling through the cable is too much? Should a thicker cable have been used to prevent this from happening?
I am planning to replace the whole unit with another electric shower but want to read up and understand the process beforehand.
Appreciate any guidance on the matter.
