Uses positive head pump instead of negative pump

Hi All, my first post and you guys already know I am a cheapskate. :D
I have an old fashion retirement home converted flat. The bath tap works great but you cannot have a shower as the system is a gravity feed hot water tank thingy. Wanted to put a shower pump in and been reading drawings on when to use a negative/positive pump. In my case, it will be a negative pump as the cold water tank will be about the same height as the showerhead. The negative pump is extortionately expensive and I believe from what I have read, the difference is that the negative head pump has a sensor to know a flow of water at a much lower rate and the positive head requires a 0.6 ltr per minute of flow for it to work.
Now, what if....... I first run the shower with the showerhead sitting on a low level, I only raise the showerhead when the pump is activated (which I hope I would feel the increased pressure). Would this theory work as I have imagined........
