Have I messed up bath filler installation?

Have I destroyed my bath or am I missing a simple solution? I hoped to install the filler in the middle off the bath however I can't get the locking nut on because of the strengthener. Can I just trim this back to make room for the nut? I could reinforce with a timber batten after.
