Clay channel repair

Hello,
I am new to the forum so hope this is posted in the right place.
I'm looking for some advice on a repair of a section of clay channel that is set in a old concrete inspection chamber. The channel section has cracked into a number of loose pieces on a bed of water saturated soil.
I believe the rest of the drain is sound and the waste flows well. However water is seeping into the ground with every flow.
I think I can source a replacement section of channel but I'm not sure how it should fitted. Should it sit on a particular bed? Should that be mortar, concrete or some sort of compacted aggregate?
Assuming mortar will needed to fix and point the channel, does it need to be a particular mix?
Any other any advice for carrying out the work would be helpful.
Cheers
