We are having a new kitchen put in and have a free-standing dishwasher and washer-dryer under a worktop and either side of the sink unit. The electrician has wired a metal box on the wall behind where each appliance is to go but these will be under the worktop. We do not have the units in place as yet so it could be that he is going to do something else but I would have thought that these boxes should have been above the worktop so that each appliance could be isolated if needed without having to pull each item out in order to switch off before performing any repairs.

If they were not freestanding then you would need an isolator but with freestanding although a nice addition not a requirement. The normal method is a grid switch above the worktop with names engraved on the switches and socket under the worktop to plug them into or a spur unit.
