hi,i have a ring main in the attic of an extension which feed 5 double power sockets, can i take a spur off this ring main for the lighting circuit and if so what would i need,thanks.

Most lighting has a max of 5 amp so would need fused spur also on new regs any safety lighting i.e. where it is relied on can't come off same RCD for sockets in the same area. Running additional lights of ring main through fused spur is normally OK but not primary lights unless unless also emergency lighting is installed.

thanks for the reply,what do you mean "fused spur",can't i just fit a junction box in the ring main then take a spur to the lighting circuit.

Sorry no ring mains up to 32 amp lighting max at 16 amp and most ceiling roses only rated at 5 or 6 amp so has to be fused

Using screwfix as an example 56715 Crabtree 13A DP FCU without switch or 62554 Crabtree 13A DP Sw FCU for a single light where switch is in with fuse. A backing box to suit where it is to be mounted. If mounting where it could get knocked 22894 MK 13A FCU Metal Clad may be more suitable again also available in switched type 11685 13A Sw FCU Metal Clad also of course fuses 18818 Fuse 3A Pack of 10 or 13543 Fuse 5A Pack of 10 you may been grommets or glands two 18138 IP68 Nylon Gland Black 20mm Pack of 10 or 11833 PVC Grommet Open Pack of 100 don't forget cable with earth sleeving if required and your lamp.
