Switch cable too short now

Attempting to tackle what I thought should be straightforward, changing white standard light switch to a fancier one which fits flush to wall surface. Unfortunately the recessed box was not deep enough and the wires must have been pressed on to the back of the box when screwing the plate on, and the screw on the backplate has cut through the cover on one of the wires. The circuit tripped as soon as I reconnected the supply. the wire was too brittle now to do anything with but is now too short to connect properly to the connections. Is the only alternative to cut through the platerboard to remove the wire behind to fit a new one (it is obviously clipped to the breeze blocks behind the plasterboard)? Cheers
