by bealp » Thu Jun 05, 2008 4:10 pm

Hi Half the lights upstairs have stopped working - two upstairs rooms are OK but all the other rooms are dead. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Hi bealp,
Has any work been carried out in the house before this happend, do you have unboarded loft and has any thing been put in it or moved about?
because most probally a loose connection somewhere on the circuit best place to start is at the first light on the circuit, if known, i'm guessing that the downstairs lights are on a different circuit! try landing light first the connection will be at the ceiling rose point. You will need to beable to identify the conductors i.e live/line, neutral and earth. This fault does not have to be at a light that is not working! Have a look if your stumped report back!

Sorry if this seems obvious - have you checked the bulbs, I only ask because last year when I was away for a week my wife called out an emergency electrician late in the evening because when she turned a light on the bulb blew and tripped the mcb. when she reset the mcb the light did not work - call out fee and job cost = over £100 for a new light bulb.

Are the lights on seperate circuits ?
Have you had any work done recently?
