Wiring lamps

We have bought some wall lights from Ikea that go with a mirror, expecting a plug on the end of a cable to power them. However, when the box was opened, it needed a cable from a lighting circuit in the wall to be attached to the lights (which we don't have).
Is there any reason I can't attach a normal appliance plug and cable instead?
If so what do I do with the earth wire on the cable as there is nowhere to connect it on the (plastic) light fitting?
Thanks
