Electrics trip when water heater for boiler is switched on

Hi all, hope you can help me.

The problem is that whenever I switch on the water heater for my boiler, it trips the RCD on the main circuit and all the electrics go out. I have lived in my house for over a year now and this is the first time this has happened.

The water heater switch is located in a cupboard where the boiler is held. I have checked the switch wiring and there is nothing loose or out of place, I assume it is a earthing issue but cannot find the cause.

Any ideas of how this issue can be remedied would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely your element has gone here in North Wales they last 25 years plus but places like Suffolk will have to replace every few years because of the lime in the water. We would normally test with an insulation tested "Mega" which is not normally found in a DIY tool kit and often the cylinder needs cleaning as well so you may be better not DIYing this job.
