I am installing zone 1 downlights in my bathroom. The roof is directly above with only 3 inch joists. Subsequently any downlight i have looked at would be pushing against the tar/string felting which would either melt or catch fire with halogens. Have tried LEDs but far too dim and prob against regs cos potential of someone putting halogen lamp in. I understand lights with transformers are lower voltage but are they lower heat and would this work? If not are there any lights that would fit or have heat protection?

Look at compact florescent units also called cold cathode. With GU10 these are about 11 watt I can see your point about changing bulbs and there are some units 2D for example which can only use florescent but Zone 1 could be a problem you are aware zone limits changed this year?
