mains supply to outside gate electric motor

I want to install a mains electric supply to an electric motor for opening a heavy wooden sliding gate across my drive.
I intend to take the cable underground for about three metres. I want the installation to comply with the IEE regulations 17th edition.
The questions I have are:
Should there be a dedicated RCD for this circuit?
Can the RCD be fitted to the external wall where the cable will emerge?
What cable should be used - SWA (steel wire armoured), SY flexible, or 2.5 mm PVC twin and earth run through PVC electrical conduit?
How deep should the trench be, and does it have to be marked?
I am a Chartered Electrical Engineer (electronics) and very practical, but not a qualified electrician. I am very aware of safety issues.
Thanks
