As part of a bigger renovation, I'd like to put a wall light in the centre of a wall. However, where the wire will go vertically up the wall it will meet a joist at the top making the cable routing a bit tricky!

As the cable has entered a permitted wiring zone 120mm from the top of the wall, can the vertical cable enter this zone and then do a quick left , right so it can enter the ceiling space between joists? or shall I just rethink the location of the wall light?

The permitted zone is straight up from fitting with 150mm tolerance band from the fitting and 150mm inside internal angles, so you would be allowed to take this route. If not you can offer the cable mechanical protection, and RCD protection too.
