Attaching surface mounted Socket

Are there any regulations regarding what material you can mount a socket on? Specifically can you surface mount a socket on combustable material such as MDF or timber?

I have a surface mounted socket at the back on a cupboard which is currently fixed to plasterboard but the plasterboard has become damaged and the socket is now loose. Rather than replacing the plasterboard and waiting for the same to happen again I wonder if I can replace the plasterboard with a sheet of MDF or timber which will be slightly more robust.

Thanks

Hi, nothing to prevent it as long as solid fixing.
EG sockets in kitchen units are fine on sides (chipboard) but not on backs (hardboard)
