what is the difference between 63A and 80A RCCB's? is one just capable of taking more power through it?
if i have a 100A main incomer with 2 63A rccb (17th Ed) is it safe to swap one of them to an 80A?
my 63A RCCB has broken and i have a spare 80A in box (like you do!). just want to make sure it is ok and safe before i get someone out and potential waste their time and my money.

If this is just an RCD it provides no overcurrent protection so as you surmise the rating is just the current it can stand.
If it is an RCBO it is a measure of it's trip current

Going up in amps is not a problem as long as it does fit.
There are three ratings
1) Amount of amps it can handle with out over heating i.e. 80
2) The amount of amps it can switch which will be a lot higher. In 1000's of amps range and is matched to let through amps on main fuse. i.e. The few thousand amps that's flows for few milli-seconds before fuse blows on short circuit.
3) The amount of amps it trips at i.e. 0.03A
You need to check all three match.
