I wishing to put a curtain pole above my front door. This involves drilling a few holes above the door. My problem is that I have a stud/voltage detector which tells me there is metal in the wall, im reluctant to drill my holes just in case i drill in to a live wire!! How do I know what i am drilling in to

Above your door , areas called safe zones should have
been taken into account when your wiring was installed.
FROM the ceiling down a distance of 150mm ( 6 inches )
across the whole wall , any thing inside this area should
contain Cables.
you can use ayour cable voltage detector to check for
cables b4 drilling.

This is WRONG - the "safe" zone 150mm down from the ceiling is where it is "safe" to install wiring. Wiring Regs 522.6.6(v): "A cable concealed in a wall ... shall be installed in a zone within 150mm from the top of the wall ...or within 150mm of an angloe formed by two adjoining walls".
