My boat is wired for mains electric and the plug in has a covered female connection. I am wanting to put an inverter on the battery but the connection from that is also female. I assume that a male/male extention is out so would it be possible to change the plug to an ordinary male one?.

I will assume the inverter has standard 13A socket which would be female of course.
The boat is likely to have a 16A plug which likely will have a shroud around the pins.
But as you say you will not have plug both ends. The forum does not allow pictures I would say your best option is to use one that does.
