I have had to remove a GU10 fitting from an alcove for reasons of ceiling space and want to replace it with another light that will do a similar job.

I thought of a cupboard light. The circuit is connected to all my lights on the stairs and hallway of the house.

What would work with the wiring already in place? I rewired the house, with help, only three years ago.

Any assistance appreciated.

Any low voltage (230vac) fitting. What are you asking? GU10 are mains voltage so any mains voltage lamp will work.

I'm asking because I wasn't sure if there was any transformer involved in the GU10. I'm not an electrician, that's obvious, and I would have known the answer two years ago when fitting them, it is in an awkward spot to get to.

Yes mains voltage I will admit because mains is "Low Voltage" and the 12 volt things are "Extra Low Voltage" it does confuse people. From 50vac to 1000vac is low voltage. And the GU10 and GZ10 are also low voltage. The GU10 lamps will fit any fitting but GZ10 will only fit GZ10 fitting because the amount of heat sent backwards with GZ10 fittings.
The GU10 will work with LED and Cold cathode lamps as well I use 11W cold cathode in mine.
