Plug Socket on External Plasterboard Wall?

Hello
Its my first post here so please be nice :D
I have a Cornish style property (First Floor has Roof tiles same as the roof)
Yesterday I went to add another power socket into one of our upstairs room (External Wall), I cut a socket sized hole in the wall and pushed out the Plasterboard to revel a void between the plasterboard and the roof/wall tiles. The Plasterboard is of a single thickness and has a silver backing on it. I'm not sure if its OK to install a plug socket with the back facing the void?
All the downstairs and internal walls are of a double skin construction so I haven't come across this issue before!
Any advise would be great
Nigel
