low voltage light unit - can I put a plug on it?

Hello,
First post, and not to dumb I hope. If a query about electricity is ever dumb, lol.
Thinking of fitting a low voltage wall lamp, but don't really want it wired into main room lighting, e.g. switched on/off along with main ceiling rose light.
Wall light for occasional use so also quite happy to have it switched locally to light.
Wall light is powered by 240v in - 12v out to lights transformer which is expected to be wired in (by electrician?)
Is it possible I can simply put a power chord with plug into transformer from a socket, possibly with some sort of in-line, or in cable on/off switch?
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Ewan
