3 gang switch replacement

by marktowl » Sun Jun 10, 2007 10:02 pm

I have a new problem for everyone. I want to replace a 3 gang light switch.
Currently set up is

L2---L3 -L1- L2---L3

-L1- L2---L3 -L1-

L1 left bottom relates to L2 and L3 top left, L1 top middle relates to L2 and L3 bottom middle, L1 bottom right relates to L2 and L3 right top

The top row are connected from the same output "red wire". L2 on the left is connected to L1 in middle and L2 on right.
The bottom row is yellow with red band on left L1, blue with red band on L2 middle and red on L1 right side.
The black wire associated with main outpur powering lower part of diagram has been taped off.

Now I have bought a new switch which is laid out as follows

L L1 L2 L

L1 L2 L L1 L2

L left top is related to L1 and L2, L middle bottom is related to L1 and L2 top middle, L right top is related to L1 and L2 bottom right

Please could someone answer where do the wires go on the new switch?

Hi just looking at your very good drawing tells all you need to do.
for each sw L1 on old = L new
L2 old= L1 new
L3 old= L2 new
because old L1 is Common 2+3 are sw. links (known as 'straps')
and new L is common 1+2 are straps for each sw.

change then one sw. set at a time & check each works as 2way before doing next set of 3 wiresregards SPARX
