Three phase or single phase, 110v or 230v or 400v, Direct on line, star delta, Inverter, soft start, Auto transformer, resistor. You may as well ask length of piece of string.

Hi ericmark
sorry about that . single phase 230v . It's just a normal house with garage.
garage attached to house, consumer unit is just 12 inches through the wall of garage/workshop.
cheers

You still give very little information but I can make a few comments.
1) To take a supply from the consumer unit will require notification under Part P and the LABC charge so much over £100 it is not really worth doing it DIY you may as well get an electrician who is a member of a scheme and can sign it off himself.
2) Any rotating machine needs some protection so if turned on and there is a power cut it does not re-start when power comes back. Easy way would be to use an "ACTIVE" RCD these drop out when there is a power cut.
3) Starting single phase machines can require special starters and extra power to start it. Motors with brushes have very different controls to squirrel cage motors and some of the starters can be very expensive but double as both MCB and Starter. It can use capacitors, and/or centrifugal switches and you may need type C or D MCB's to allow it to start. Because of this the ELI (Earth loop impedance) may need to be very low so heavier cables may be required.
As I have said the information is not enough to really give an answer but since likely it will be cheaper to employ an electrician seems pointless anyway.
