Hi there. I am new to the forum. I want to fit a security light onto the side of my house and use the kitchen light switch to switch it on. The problem i have is that the kitchen light switch is only a single switch outlet.

Can i replace the single switch with a double switch so that i can use one of the switches for the outside light. If so then how do I wire up the new double switch and can I get the live feed from the exsisting live that goes to the single switch at the moment.

Any help gratefully recieved.

The standard way that lights are wired in the UK does not take a neutral wire to the switch so any extra lights need to be wired to the ceiling rose not the light switch.

The wire in the light switch should have a sleeve to show it is line not neutral but this is often missed out as electricians will know it is not a neutral in the switch.

There are some odd times when neutral is taken to the switch but that is rare.
