I am fitting some downlighters in an upstairs ceiling they are fire rated but I am worried about the loft insulation and the heat they give off, I have seen metal box's in B & Q that you can put round them but there expensive for what they are, was thinking of making my own out of sheet metal unless anyone has a better idea?
Thanks,
Lee.

Hi Lee

I'm doing a smiliar project.

In the instructions for the lights I got it says you need at least 5 cm clearance around the light, i.e remove any insulation from around the light.

I'm going to use low power GU 10 replacement bults, this will also reduce the heat generated. The use 7W, instead of 35W. Only disadvantage is they are non-dimmable.

You can see the spiral fluorecent tube in the bulb, which doesn't look as nice as a real GU10, but it's not bad.

In my case the looks are a little less important as the lights are in a wardrobe.

Hope this helps.

HI both, wire mesh (small) works well is cheap & lets heat out, holds insulation clear very easy to form and wire corners together to make box,
