Is it ok to run lighting cable in a pitched roof without it being in conduit(for protection)as the gap between the insulation and the plasterboard is so small that the cable will slide through easily, but to put conduit in would require the plasterboard to be ripped out. I believe the regs state that the cable should be mechanically protected so as not to be penetrated by nails etc but that wouldn't be possible in this instance without the plasterboard being removed first.

regs can't cover every condition & only say to be mechanicaly protected if run in unexpected routes where danger of penetration could happen...
we have ICI 'flexell' ceiling heating in part of bungalow, which is laying on plasterboard, no protection at all except tiny note on each room stat. saying don't penetrate cieling at all, so don't think one cable gonna be prob.

Thanks for reply. Would plastic pipe conduit be sufficient as 'mechanical protection'. This is flexible and wouldn't need earth bonding.
