I moved into a brand new property and have started replacing some of the light switches with dimmers. when I removed the old switches I was supprised to find that the lighting ring was taken to the switch rather than the ceiling rose. to put it another way for a single gang switch 3 twin+earth cables go to the switch 2 for the ring and one going to the ceiling rose with the 3 earths and 3 neutrals joined in a loose terminal block in the back box.

Is this a normal way to wire the circuit? if not is it legal?

I always thought the ring went to the ceiling rose and a single cable to the switch.

IT CAN B WIRED THIS WAY. CONNECTIONS SHOULD BE INSULATED WITH TAPE WHERE NOT IN TERMINALS.

It's not illegal. It just makes more accessible to remove the switch rather than get up to the ceiling rose should a fault occur. In my experience it's usually used with light fittings that may be difficult to install.
