Wiring a one gang light switch with a newer light switch

by British » Mon May 04, 2015 2:45 pm

Can anyone help? I am replacing a 1 gang light switch with a newer light switch, the old light switch had 3 holes for the wires, one which says common. The new light switch has 4 holes L1 L1 L2 L2. Which holes do I attach the red and blue?

Likely L1 and L2 it would seem you have a double pole replacement which is no problem you just use one half.

Switches come as:-
On/Off,
Two Way,
Intermediate,
Double pole.
It could be either of the last two but it will still do the job. There does not seem to be a standard marking make to make some label it Com others L1 which means the remaining can be L1 and L2 or L2 and L3 so I just use my meter.

But if you get it wrong it will not do any harm.
