Light with 3 Power cables problem

Hi All,
Today I bought a bog standard light fitting from Homebase with 3 wires and a terminal block with 3 opposites.
I got home, cut the power and took off the existing ceiling fan / light that was there. Now I am stumped as there are 3 power cables, each with three wires, and one of the black wires has a red band on it (indicating the switch i assume). I have tried all three cables in the jacks seperately and in most combinations I can think of but they either result in the circuit tripping or nothing happens.
If you could possibly offer any advice I would be very grateful.
Many thanks in advance
Edd
