My old Hotpoint Fridge/Freezer is now used to brew beer in, I want around 19.5 to 20°C so the plug goes into a unit which switches it one when required. I have noticed quite a delay between power going on and the motor starting to run, I assume it is doing some self check each time it is switched on.
Also both the fridge/freezer and the temperature controller both have a motor protection delay. Once the motor has run there is pressure in the pipes, so the delay allows the pressure to drop.
Standard temperatures are -18°C for freezer (freezing point of salt water) fridge 4~5°C and wine fridge 12°C holiday mode designed to stop mould forming but cost less then fridge is empty is around 14°C.
Fridges and freezers have moved on, even my old Hotpoint cools freezer first after being off, there are solenoid valves that control fridge and freezer independent today. And now units are three phase with and inverter drive which makes them more reliable and they don't shake about any more.
The frost free is today a must, not because of the frost build up, but because it has fans inside so the temperature says even throughout the freezer, no hot spots. Also you can remove a shelf to get Christmas Turkey in.
EU rules however have been a problem, the push to get more and more economic has resulted in larger and larger fridges and smaller and smaller freezers, it seems only way to comply for manufacturers is to produce matching fridge and freezer rather than have them combined.
