Detectors and Locators for Finding Cables in Walls

Which is the best of the reasonably priced locator for finding 'live' cables in walls.
I have bought in the past one from Wickes and have another given to me from new called a 'Budgie' (no not aunties with feathers ) and not much luck with that one either even though cables are only about 1" to 1 1/2" in the walls with plastic capping. When switched to 'Metal' neither found the nails holding the capping . It's got to the point I no longer trust these ones sold in the Diy stores.
