Removed one light fixture now the other is over heating!

I have two ceiling light fixtures in my living room. I had a water leak from thecupstairs bathroom, which dripped into one light and has burned it out. I removed the light unit. After one hour, the second light unit stopped working. The main unit of the light was very hot, it would not switch back on. Once it had cooled down it worked again.
Both are identical light units and connect to a double dimmer switch, there are seperate dimmer switch buttons for each light unit so you can turn one on independently of the other.
Would removing one cause an overload on the second? surely it's not different to just not switching on the other unit?
Thanks for any help or guidance.
