New to this, I have ordered an electric fireplace, flat to wall and wooden surround, a fuse spur socket is on the wall where the fire is going. Shop has said we need to change it to a socket before the fireplace can be installed. A friend has just said we shouldn’t do this and should put a plug socket next to it. Any thoughts?

If you put a socket next to it, what will you do with the fused connection unit?
You will save money by changing the fused connection unit to a socket since you will not have to buy a patress to mount the socket on, and you will also not need any extra cable to connect this new socket with.

Change the fused connection unit to a socket, job done.

Very easy to swap a FCU to a socket, however the reason for a FCU is to stop people unplugging things like central heating boilers or anything which needs to cool down, like built in oven, don't want fans to stop. So if cooling fans on the fire FCU best if not socket OK.
