New Replacement Wall Switch-Neon Light Not Coming on

Hello all,
This is probably a silly question, sorry.

I am trying to replace an existing wall light switch with one with a neon light as we keep leaving it on (it's for an external floodlight)

I have wired the new neon switch the same as the old one (two red wires from the wall into L1 and L2 as previously)

Wickes think the reason it's not coming on is because it needs a Neutral, there is a capped off neutral wire in the socket for the light switch (along with an earth which is connected to the backing plate)

I am unsure of how to proceed, the floodlight turns on and off fine but the neon doesn't come on (it's a brand new switch)

What do I do please?

What happened to the old switch? did it have a neon?

How do you know the other wire in the back box is neutral? colours do not mean anything.

What are these "two red wires from the wall"

(Clear) Pictures would help

I'm assuming it's neutral because I have red live wires and a green/yellow earth.

No it didn't have a neon, which is why I'm changing it

I thought you were assuming.
As I said you can not assume it is a neutral, you will need to get some one to check it for you.

Or you could buy a multimeter and learn how to use it.
Multi meters can be had for less than £20 and can be used for a variety of things.
