On the outside of my house, next to the front door, I've had a mystery box containing a cable that I don't know what it's for.

Its located to the left of my front door. It's not for a light as there already is one on the other side of the door. Also every house down my street and the surrounding area has one.

I want to remove it (push it back into the wall) and cover it with a house number plaque, but I'd like to know what it might be for first! My local electrician wasn't sure, which surprised me.

Looks like coax, you can have 5 or 12 volt on coax to work an LNB or mast head amp, as to why at door can only guess, maybe was intended for door entry system. I would test to see if any volts, if not then OK to hide.
