Wiring Question for Halogen Lights in Cupboard

I have some under cupboard halogen (I think) lights in my kitchen that I would like to replace. They are mains wired with a transformer in the ceiling. It would be really hard to get to the transformer but it looks like it would be easy to replace if I go like for like.
There are two wires coming out of the wall (presumably fed from the transformer in the ceiling) that are joined to two wires in the light. Assuming I buy a similar light and it also has two wires, how do I know which connects to which as they are not color-coded? Or doesn't it matter?
I would be grateful for any advice.
Many thanks.
