Replacing a Faulty Extractor fan With a Timer or Humidistat one

Hi, I need to replace a noisy extractor fan in a toilet room (in a house that we're renovating) where the walls get damp. I thought it would be good to get a humidistat one. Currently the fan works when the pull cord for the light is pulled. Can anyone tell me please if a humidistat or timer extractor would work with the current set up. Thanks.
